This is our favorite sushi bar in the world! Discreetly tucked in the back of an unassuming strip
Center, this husband and wife team are the real deal-Japanese trained with all their skill focused on each day's diners. Just order the Omakase and you will be delighted!!
Be sure to call ahead, weeks or months ahead to be sure you will have one of only 13 seats in this intimate little restaurant. We can not recommend this more highly! -

An authentic cosy sushi restaurant with tasty fresh fish! My boyfriend made a reservation 2-3 weeks in advance and I'd recommend making an early reservation as well as this place seems to book out very fast. They are able to seat 16 people in there at a time, and even as we were eating, there were a number of people who unknowingly came in during dinner time hoping for a last minute table, only to be turned away.
There is one chef working at the sushi bar, a lady who serves and handles seating, and another lady in the back kitchen. The atmosphere is very comfortable and the staff are all incredibly sweet. They offer a $45 Omakase menu, which is a steal ! Because there is only one sushi chef, they do not do Omakase piece by piece like some other sushi restaurants I've been to do, and instead all the pieces come out at once like a combo. There was an large array of different nigiri sushi so if you're not shy about trying different fish/seafood, then this is a great deal! -

We booked our reservations 3 weeks ago for tonight and got to try Koiso for the first time, with kids in tow. We had an excellent dinner for $175, and we were impressed with the quality and quantity. I think this may truly be the best sushi joint in Maui.
We got two omakases, some eel & avocado rolls plus California rolls, tamago, hamachi collar. The omakase included two different types of tuna, o-toro, salmon belly, tai snapper, hotate (scallop), hamachi, kanpachi, uni, hirame, amaebi, and anago. It was very adequately filling and also fulfilling for only $45. The cuts were super fresh, really up there for outside of Japan. The uni stood out especially because it was so so amazingly fresh and was the best uni I've ever had! The tai really stood out as well, really buttery and delicious. Everything was really excellent to be honest. The eel in the eel avocado rolls were freshly broiled and very fresh and delicious as well. Hamachi collar tender and broiled just right. Tamago was obviously made in house and flavored very nicely and were generous pieces. There was nothing we didn't like, a true mark of a high tier establishment.
Loved the perfectly ripe, plump, juicy complimentary sweet lychees at the end of the meal, and appreciated the complimentary edamame while we waited for our food as well! Thanks Koiso, can't wait to come back again next time! -

It pains me to read bad Yelp reviews about this place, but to each his/her own. I read the reviews about slow service, few seating, and it being reservation only, but I don't think those people have ever been to legitimate sushi restaurants. I think this is honestly one of the best I've ever been to and I encourage you to not let the bad reviews dissuade you from coming.
Reasons why you should go:
1) Yes, this place is reservation only, and yes, the chef will actually turn away walk-in customers, but I like how he purposely does that to keep the environment intimate. The chef actually likes to talk to each customer and he seems like he genuinely wants you to have the best dining experience possible. There's a reason why the majority of the restaurant is filled with returning customers. If you buy a bottle of sake and don't finish it, he'll keep it on a shelf near the bar for you.
2) Omakase is only $45. If you've ever been to another legit sushi restaurant, you'll know that omakase is usually over $100 at its starting price. You may have doubts about the fish quality, but I assure you the quality is top notch. My wife and I each ordered one, but my only regret is not ordering another one.
3) Read reasons 1 & 2 again
So again, you should definitely go here to experience an authentic sushi restaurant, at a very reasonable price. -

Amazing sushi in Maui at a great value for the island. I had omakase which was only $45 along with extra spicy tuna roll, blue fin tuna belly sashimi, broiled black cod, and hamachi roll.
A lot of the restaurants in Maui are tourist traps, overpriced, or mediocre food. This was none of the above. I highly recommend calling ahead and booking reservations early. The entire family was so cute and nice.
Tips: call ahead early for reservations, the extra spicy tuna is quite spicy, and order the omakase. Generous portion of uni, enjoyed the eel, fatty tuna, blue fin, hamachi, and a few local fish (I subbed for salmon bc salmon is just crappy American sushi).
